Becoming A Physician’s Assistant.?
I am 21 and I have a year left of my undergraduate work. I am majoring in Psych/Pre-med and minoring in Spanish. I am excited to study abroad in Spain this summer! The dilemma I am facing is my GPA. I won’t ever be able to achieve a 3.7 in a year, but it also isn’t below 3.0. I have a moderately high GRE score, I have TONS of shadowing experience, and I have quite a bit of experience in the medical field. I’ve worked in the hospital setting for 3 years doing CNA and phlebotomy work. I’ve also received my EMT license and will begin working with EMS soon. What I am concerned about is if this is a lost cause since there will no doubt be many PA applicants with a 4.0 GPA. Am i just spinning my wheels, or is there a glimmer of hope to get out of this “rut” I’m in??

Grades alone do not guarantee a spot in a PA program. Other factors such as health care experience, work experience and your interpersonal skills are all important. There will be many applicants who don’t have a 4.0 GPA so that is not too concerning. As long as you meet the minimal GPA requirement you should apply. Your experience will improve your resume.
Good luck!
Seriously, all you can do is apply. You will never know until you do so. You are not only competing with yourself but with those who apply the same time you do, and that can change from year to year, so you never know. If that is what you want to do, then you owe yourself to go for it. PA school however, is not easy–you are learning, in a very short time, to practice medicine. You just need to be as prepared as you can be.
