Close To Earning Degree, But Closer To Homeless And Hungry..what Can I Do?

By CNAGuide

I am semster away from graduating with a bachelors degree in general studies. I work as a CNA in a busy ER FT and I only make 9.96 an hour (with 13 years experience). This week my take home pay was 589 dollars which is hardly enough for a single parent of three to make it two more weeks. I made more money before (and when in another state) but can’t seem to get more than 13 dollars hourly at even the best hospital jobs.
I need to make more money very quickly before I find myself homeless with my kids again for another year. What can I do job wise since I am VERY close to graduating to get more money or better work hours and conditions. I tried baragaining with my employer for more money but they would not budge. I had been unemployed for a year so I dare not quit unitl I find better. I have applied for foodstamps but the system is sooooooo hard to penetrate here as I have been cut when I did recieve them, and denied twice in the last two months. My kids are always hungry and I feel like such a bad parent.
What can I do being that I am so close to possibly earning more money, but have not reached it yet? Is there anywhere that will hire me with some college for more money? Anyone that will hire me with a pending degree but with degree pay possibly? When I apply in certain helathcare places and they see my work experience as a CNA/ MOA I get passed over for any other position to use my degree…help please!

I second the suggestions of the first poster- local food panties should be your first stop and if you have a church that should be your second stop.
In addition, I would check with your financial aid office ASAP. I’m sure they could do something for you.
In addition to that, one job that pays a lot is private tutoring. You can make between $20 and $50/hr depending on your level of expertise in a subject and there are always students on a college campus looking for a tutor.
You might also try babysitting. It’s hard work but since you’re already watching your 3, it might not be too much to watch one more child, for 1 – 3 hours/wk at a rate of like $15 – $20/hr depending on what people pay.
    GOOD LUCK!!!

Have you checked into any local food pantries to supplement your groceries? In addition, you can check out some churches or non-profit agencies that can help supplement your housing/utility costs.

  3. just not that

You can major in something besides general studies. That isn’t going to get you more than 9 dollars an hour!!!
