Could I Lose My Job From Taking A Month Of From Work For A Family Vacation?

By CNAGuide

In the summer of 2010 my brother is getting married on a cruise to the Caribbean. Obviously my whole family is going along, but I have one major concern…the trip in total would take nearly a month by the time we leave to the time we get back. I work as a CNA but I’m worried that when I talk to my boss about this and seriously ask for that much time off, that she would let me go on the spot, deem me unresponsible or not be able to promise me my job when I get back. I really can’t miss my brother’s wedding, but I need to keep this job at the same time. What should I do? Could it happen? Thanks

I’m no expert but possibly. If your job is an easy position to fill with employees who are willing to work just as hard if not harder than you did then yes. But if you’re in some sort of specialized field that is hard to find someone with the same qualifications then you have a better chance of keeping it. If you have a good record of being on time, not too many sick or personal days, good worker with very few demands or complaints, and have been there a while then it is more likely your boss will give you the time off. and if you bring that up then that’s good too. But if you do decide to bring it up don’t sound, whiny, arrogant, or like you are better than other employees.
But you also have to know what type of person your boss is (if they seem like a kind enough person they might let you but if not then you might not want to ask)
If you can afford that long of a cruise then why can’t you afford to lose your job? Or if your brother or his wife’s family is rich then (this may sound ludicrous) but if they are on the cruise when they get married then you could have a separate, small boat to take you back…but that all on depends on if you are stopping at all on the cruise or if you would be able to arrange that with the captain of the ship)
You don’t have to listen to me at all though. This is just what I would do if I were in your position. You should really discuss this with your family.
