Do I Have A Better Chance At Getting Into The Nursing (rn) Program At My School If I’m A Cna?

By CNAGuide

I’m a freshman at my local community college. My grades are slacking and I won’t be able to get the required GPA (a 3.0) for our nursing program until either Spring or Fall 2010. That’s fine with me. I’m just wondering since the competition is hard right now, do you think they’d take someone with previous slacking grades who is a Certified Nursing Assistant with working experience in a hospital over a new nursing student with just good grades? Thanks!

I’ve seen some questions on here that indicated their school’s nursing program required the participants to get certified as a nursing assistant first. It can’t hurt to be a CNA first, and it will give you experience in a medical setting where you can probably get help from staff nurses with your studies. It would be good to get experience in hospitals and long term care facilities. To that end, get certified and work for an agency that places CNAs in local facilities. You’ll get a well rounded bit of experience while going to school, and it’ll give you insight on where you’d like to try to find permanent employment.
