I Want My Traning To Get Some Where?

By CNAGuide

Hey there, so I have been doing H/J since I was 8 (14 now) And I’ve been riding with the same trainer since then, I really want my traning to get some wher,e since it seems it hasn’t. I’ve been jumping up to 2’6 conisistantly, we do the same stuff over and over, I mean, I could progress my training if I had a horse, but my mom just can’t afford to pay the $500 some board a month, and I’m half leasing a school horse, but I cna’t do much with him, besides ground work. I feel like My trainer is getting more of the benifet than I am. What should I do about this? I LOVE H/J but I feel like I am getting no where! I want to be challenged,I want to show, what are some things i can do?

Hey there chica you sound a lot like me when I was 14. I am 28 now and I can understand your frustrations and I remember that feeling of wanting to be challenged so much more than what I was doing god do I remember than :o )
Well lets see here have you looked to see if there are any cheaper but good boarding facilities? so you could eventually afford your own horse. I know that is really hard to do but where I lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming we got a stall with a run for 50/month but it was all self care and I loved it there. However in most places anything less that 200/month is hard to find.
Have you thought of trying other types of riding say dressage? I found that rather challenging. I also rode western but that to me was not much of a challenge.
One time I found a stable where I did a lot of cleaning and mucking (around 15 stalls) on the weekends in exchange for lessons of different types.
I know how you feel and how frustrating it can get so I hope you can find something. You sound very talented and it would be a shame to not be able to get “more” of what you want especially because it seems your ready.
Good luck chica. If you need anything you can email me.

If you have been able to jump, you’ve gotten somewhere! But now, if your stuck, I would tell her that I’d like to learn some more, even maybe jump higher. I had to do that with my training during the 1st year of riding- All I was doing was trotting, and i wanted to canter, so I told her and she was fine with it, and now she knows that I like to take on new things. Speak up and you’ll get far! Good luck!
if she said no, then I say you outgrown your trainer. It happens to all of us, we apperciate there help but now it’s time to move on! stay in touvh with your old trainer, but do find a new one that can teach you more.

Talk to your trainer and say that you both seem stuck in a rut, nothing that you have been doing is challenging and that you want to take it to the next level. If the instructor isn’t prepared to make that leap of faith in you and your abilities, then it might be time to find a new instructor.
Edit – so because she isn’t allowed to, you are now stuck in a permanent world of 2′ 6″ fences and repetitive lessons? You”ll never progress like that and you’ll eventually grow sour of this. You need to find someone else that can move you forward and develop your ability rather than leaving you to stagnate at the same level for ever!

Everyone outgrows their trainers and their situations and their horses if they keep progressing with their horsemanship skills. While there is nothing wrong with reaching a certain level and staying there, if that’s what you want, it’s great to want to get better and do more.
The first thing to do is to tell your trainer what you just told us. Perhaps your trainer is giving you what she thinks you want.
If you have talked to her and nothing is changing then the only thing you can do is change trainers. Talk to your mom about what you want to do and see what’s possible. Finances can be a terrible thing! We all wish we had the money to do what we want but few do. You might want to try to find ways to make a bit of money to spend on lessons or leasing. You might want to join a 4-H club or Pony Club if there are groups near you that you think might have something for you. Some 4-H groups are outstanding and some not so much.
If you’re really as committed as you seem, you’ll find a way. Go for it!

I would find out exactly why you cant ride or jump higher and what it would take to get there. If no answer is available it seems to me that 6 yrs is a long time to not be further then you are. I would look into other barns/ trainers. It might be better to switch to a different barn and just take lessons and more of them not worrying about leasing for a while. The find a horse to lease that you can show as well. OR if your grandparents are helping with the lease maybe they would help with board at a barn that is less expensive or even private property. You could put up fliers at feed stores and such asking if anyone would be willing to have an extra horse on their property. Then just trailer to shows and lessons or get a trainer to come to you. You might not get to ride indoors all the time but the horse would be yours to do with as needed. And there are alot of FREE good horses out there if you take the time to look.
