Good question, but I would add, Since the smell can block your taste, try thinking about it vise versa.

The most common causes for loss of sense of taste and smell are the result of a nasal obstruction, such as the common cold, breathing allergies and nasal congestion from irritants like cigarette smoke and pollutants.
Occupational exposure to chemicals may also lessen the sense of smell and certain medications can also affect the sense of smell.

Vicks works, as someone else has said. Another thing that works well is to take a wipe before you get started and smell it, sometimes the perfumes on it will hide the smell for me. Also, the longer you let someone sit in urine the worse it smells, so changing them more often will def. help with that part. As for BM's theres not too much you can do other than change it as soon as you notice and try the vicks trick.
