Medical Assistant / Cna?
I live in Houston and I was wondering how much it costs to complete a Medical Assistant program? Is it worth it? Any suggestions on where to go? How long does it take if you are working as well? Also, I was interested in taking a CNA certification course—how much does that typically cost? Is it worth it? Suggestions on where to go? With the job market now I am thinking I need to get into a field that isnt going to go anywhere.

I worked as a CNA from about 1992 – 2000. It costs about $170 for a 6 week class. Around here (Iowa), the pay is $10 – $13/hour and is in really high demand. It’s hard work and not everyone is willing to wipe butts for a living. What I did, you should look into if you can’t pay for the class, is that I worked at a nursing home and they had me do the class at the facility. It took longer and I worked at a reduced wage because I wasn’t certified but it worked for me. Some facilities will reimburse the cost of the class if you agree to work for them a certain amount of time. If Medical Assistant is OMT, then usually you get that by being recommended by your facility and they pay for the course.
Well, i’m doing a CNA course in Florida right now. There is job security, you get paid around $12 an hour. The course i’m taking is five weeks and includes cpr and first aid. If working in a nursing home is not your thing, you can always do what I’m doing, take the CNA course, a phlebotomy one, and an EKG course. If you are certified in these areas you can get a job in the hospital as a patient care tech. They earn anything from 19,500 to 27,000 a year. If you have any other salary questions you should go to salary.com. I am not planning on being a CNA forever, i will do this to work my way through nursing school. I will then be an LPN, and transfer to college to be an RN. I will probably do BSN later on. You have to have a plan if you are planning on doing something big later. Unless you already have the money. If it’s worth it it’s definitely a personal opinion. I think it’s worth it because i get to fell what it’s like to work in a hospital while going through school, and it will look good on my resume later on. If you are planning on doing something else later, like nursing I suggest CNA. But in the end you make the decision.
