My Mother Is In A Nursing Home What Are The Cna’s Duties?
My mother was told to clean up after herself. First she is hardly able to get out of bed.I wanted to know who’s job it is to take care of her hygiene and clean up her room?

There is not a lot of info here to go on, so I’ll do my best to answer your question.
It may be part of your Mom’s care plan to have her do as much for herself as possible. This is part of restorative nursing care, and should not always and immediately be chalked up to “staff laziness.” It is important for the resident’s self esteem and dignity to promote independence.
That being said, if your mother is unable to attend to her hygiene, then the CNAs assist her to the degree accorded by the care plan. Your mother may need cues, supervision, set-up, and/or the assist of one aide. CNAs may be asked to help clean up a room (such as make a bed or wipe an overbed table), but there should be housekeeping staff as well for bigger messes. CNAs are not maids and it is frustrating when residents (I am not speaking of your Mom as I do not know her or her habits) throw trash on the floor and clutter up their rooms, expecting staff to pick up after them. Nursing homes are not staffed adequately for such behavior, and messes will accumulate.
If things are not being done as you think they should, try speaking to the nurse in charge. It will help if you express some willingness to see the CNAs’ side of things– what I mean is, they are paid minimum wage and are often overburdened with the need of so many residents perhaps because a fellow staff member called out for the night. They are often not thanked and get yelled at, hit, pushed, cursed at, threatened, have their toes run over with wheelchairs, etc.
Believe me, I know there are bad and lazy CNAs out there!! But there are also good ones, and a little understanding and perhaps a smile, along with — “When you have a moment, Patty, could you please help my Mom with her teeth”– on your part will go a long way in securing the help that your Mom deserves.
All the best.
Hello there, my Grandad was in a Nursing home who neglected him very badly, he had an ulcer on his leg which turned in to MRSA, this was becuase they did not bath or shower him, did not shave him and he was told to wash himself even though he was unable to, it is the job of everyone who works in the nursing home to do this, whether they are nurses or just carers they are meant to do this. Make sure they do becuase nursing homes are very bad!
