Tammy, while Chicago may be the Mecca for MAs, I have to agree, in some areas the market is overstaurated with MA graduates. In my area MA graduates have trouble getting more than minimum wage coming out of the MA programs, and we have approximately 700 more MA graduates per year than advertised positions.

Tammy, I beg to differ, hun!
Maybe it depends on where the individual lives- I live here in Chicago and they are ALWAYS, ALWAYS hiring medical assistants!!
There’s a variety of positions open in blood donor centers, dialysis centers, hospitals, medical offices, hospitals…
    EVERYWHERE!
I work as a Med Asst at a hospital for their Cancer dept and work Mon thru Fri; I have weekends off.
And the pay is great! ($19.25 an hour).
We will be getting our annual review soon so I’m expecting an even better raise.
So my suggestion is this: Look outside from where you live to get better MA jobs – if we have MA jobs here, there’s bound to be some where YOU live
Medical Assisting is NOT a waste of time

I agree. It’s extremely demanding for the pay when you stop and realize how much RN’s or LVN’s are getting paid for basically the same work and the same responsibilities. Good for you for going for your nursing degree!!
