What Jobs Are Available In The Psychology Field Besides Becoming A Psychiatrist Or Psychologist?

By CNAGuide

My dilemma is that I am 22 years old, engaged to be married and at the moment I am unable to go to college because it was either my fiance went back to school and I waited to go or vice versa. Since my significant other knew exactly what he wanted to do I let him go first. The real problem is I wont be able to go back to college for another 3 and a half years. I have always be interested in psychology and right now I work with mentally disabled individuals as a Medication Technician/CNA. I am good at understanding people’s emotions but I just don’t know if I will be able to get a master’s degree in Psychology. Is there another career choice that will allow me to be involved in helping people who are in need?

You can get a social work bachelor’s degree and work with a variety of social welfare problems. Psych. nursing is also possible as well as the psych. tech.

You can work as a psych tech at any mental health facility. Check out your local hospitals that have behavioral health and call human resources. Most of the techs I have worked with had minimal training.

Well, I worked my way up from being an assistant at a group home, through my path as a drug addictions counselor, and now I work at a therapist. You need to look at your state license requirements…some states don’t allow a masters degree in psych to really do a whole lot of anything…to be a psychologist you need a doctorate degree.
But, there are school counselors, work place (EAP) counselors (masters degree, usually), call-in help lines, etc. Drug addictions counselors (a really interesting field, if not rough) do not require a masters degree (yet). Call up a few folks in the phone book and ask them how they go their start.
Just remember…with all those fancy initials behind the name, paperwork is the drawback to the whole job.

A great resource for you would be the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT). It has all the information that is compiled by the Department of Labor. You can find it on line.
Included are all job titles, education and experience requirements, salary ranges, expected growth of the field etc.
It may sound odd, but it is actually fun to peruse and very useful tool that we use in the field of Human Resources- Good luck!
