Will I Get Fired And/or Should I Quit? (cna’s Only Respond Please)?
Today was my first day working as a cna, and I keep worrying that I did a bad job. I tried my hardest but I just kept feeling like I didn’t do good. One of the residents that I was with got a skin tear. I helped her get dressed than she wanted to walk around with her walker, so I went with her. When I started to walk with her I noticed that she had a skin tear on her hand. It was pretty small. So I told someone and the LPN came and fixed it up. The CNA who was working with me and training me, told me that I’d have to fill out an incident report. But then she filled one out and told me that she was going to do it instead since she said she was in the room with her just before I was and also because I was in training so she would fill it out. Anyway I just felt like maybe I will get fired or something since I am the one that noticed the skin tear. The cna told me not too worry that skin tears happen all the time there. I don’t know if that is true or not , maybe she was just trying to make me feel better. It freaked me out because I’ve never seen that happen. I just don’t know what to think. It was my first day, so it probably looks bad, even though I have no idea how that even happened. Will they think that I did that to her and fire me? Wasn’t I supposed to fill out the incident report? I am just so lost, I am afraid of messing up or having an accident and one of the residents getting hurt. I try to be very careful with them, but I am just worried. I don’t know, should I just quit, I mean I don’t want to get blamed for something. No one seemed like they were blaming me, they were all really nice, but what if they try to blame me later? What should I do?

Good grief, don’t quit. Skin tears are a daily occurrence with older folks and nearly impossible to prevent due to their extremely fragile skin.
An incident report is not to get anyone in trouble. They are mostly used for tracking purposes and also help in finding better ways to do things. Things such as falls and skin tears are counted in most facilities and this is the best way to do it. An incident report is not a tattle-tale form and anyone can fill one out.
If you’re going to panic over every little thing, this may not be the profession for you. No one is going to fire you over this and you quitting would be really stupid, to be honest with you.
Relax, you have much much to learn in this job.
